This Cinema used to have real character but it unfortunately had to move with the times and they removed the single large screen and replaced it with 3 smaller ones. All of these are frankly disappointing in size and because of the room size and layout achieving any sort of reasonable sound quality is impossible. The so-called larger of the 3 screens is just about do-able for the cinema experience and the two seater sofa style seats at the back are ok but the rest of the seats are crammed too close and are too small. They also annoyingly have the heaters on all year round so about mid-way through the film the cinema looks more like a Turkish bath! Presumably this is so they can pump out more litres of overpriced weak cola. Also don’t be tempted by the food upstairs it’s awful.

Not the oldest cinema in the country - but the longest-running one. With its humble exterior on Causewayhead, the Savoy looks for all the world like the local fleapit. Don't be deceived: on the inside are three screens, two small, one larger, and all with modern upholstered seats and sound systems that would be the envy of some cinemas I know in London. It offers an extremely varied weekly programme and very reasonable ticket prices - and the fact that you buy your popcorn from the same person who sells you your ticket (and quite probably manages the projectors) adds that personal touch you just don't find up country. It isn't often that the cinema itself is part of the experience of watching a film - but at the Savoy it is.
