In 1879 local children found some pieces of pottery and showed them to retired Army Captain John Thorp who then used a probe to find the whereabouts of the villa. Since then the villa has been gradually unearthed and can be dated back to the mid 3rd century. Nowadays the villa forms part of an award wining visitor centre with cafe, shop and garden.
