Fordingbridge has a stunning example of a medieval stone bridge with seven fine arches providing the crossing point of the Avon river, upstream from the ford namesake. Legends of smuggling make for interesting history trips and money from its industrial past mean it is a bustling town today. Make sure you head out of town across the cycleways to Rockbourne Roman Villa.
Fritham in the New Forest is a little village to the north that is home to such delights as The Butt (a Bronze Age bowl barrow) and the unofficial 'forest parliament'. But most importantly it has The Royal Oak, one of the oldest pubs in the area.
The capital of the New Forest, thanks to William the Conqueror's hunting habits, Lyndhurst has been a Royal mecca for centuries. The perfect base for finding out all about the New Forest, the main museum is here, as well as wonderful walks and the final resting place of the actual Alice from Alice in Wonderland.
Things of note about the lovely little parish of Minstead are the ancient church with rare pulpit and C11 font, and the grave of Sire Arthur Conan Doyle.
