A picturesque beach stretching for just over a mile between Boat Cove and Langstone Rock, Dawlish Beach is the perfect escape from the town. With a long promenade extending the length of the beach, Dawlish provides an idyllic spot for a stroll. Wave to all those aboard the train running parallel to the promenade, then cast your gaze back to the deep blue sea.

South Milton Sands Beach

At the far eastern end of Thurlestone Sands, South Milton Sands has a manned National Trust car park, good toilets and a splendid cafe. The wide sands attract families and water sports enthusiasts, with favourable conditions for surfing, windsurfing and canoeing.

If you are looking for the perfect family beach then this could be the one. There's a wide expanse of gently sloping golden sand and numerous rockpools alongside seasonal lifeguard cover. The beach is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it's not hard to see why with views over to Bigbury and Burgh Island.

With stunning views across Lyme Bay, this shingle beach stretches for about a mile. Take your swimmers, this is a good swimming beach and ideal for kayaking. If you'd rather not walk on the pebbles there's a flat esplanade which is much easier going.

This sandy beach is easily accessed from Exmouth seafront, with plenty of parking and facilities nearby. At low tide, there are rock pools to explore and the forbodingly-named Conger Rocks. It's dog-friendly October to end-April and there are donkey rides and swing boats in the summer - a perfect beach for young families with calm, shallow waters and soft sand.
