The most famous former resident of Nether Stowey is the legendary poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge; his passion for walking the hills and valleys of this beautiful countryside is commemorated in the Coleridge Way, a magnificent 36 mile trail that crosses the Quantocks on its way to Exmoor.

If you need to take shelter, there is a cosy log cabin. An ideal watering hole for birdwatchers, walkers, cyclists and outdoor foodies al

Snowdrop Valley
Snowdrop Valley lies on the River Anvill in eastern Exmoor, near the village of Wheddon Cross. The valley has become such a popular spot for walking during snowdrop season (usually February) that the road is closed off to general traffic and the Exmoor National Park Authority operates a park-and-ride service from Wheddon Cross to Snowdrop Valley during this period. (See website for regularly updated details.) Welllies or walking shoes recommended.

Somerset Cider Brandy
Martock has been the home to Somerset Cider Brandy since 1679, 101 years before Napolean was born and grew a liking for brandy. He'd have scrumped here. These fanatical orchardists make a cider brandy that is close to getting the rubber stamp from Brussels to call itself just that, 'Cider Brandy'. If you fancy a glug, try ‘Shipwreck’. This ten-year old gem was finished in Allier oak casks salvaged (legally) from MSC Napoli that sank off Branscombe in 2007.

Tarr Steps
The Barle River rushes through Tarr Steps all winter, slowing to a trickle during the summer. The bridge is a medieval clapper bridge, perhaps one of the most photographed in the world. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic.

Taunton
Taunton is Somerset's county town and has all the shopping, dining and leisure facilities you would expect from a busy urban centre. That's not to say that Taunton has forgotten its sense of heritage and history; take a wander away from the high street and you'll find narrow lanes lined with wonderful old buildings, Victorian fountains and pretty parks entered through elaborate wrought iron gates. The castle is the highlight, though – a beautifully restored Saxon example, it now houses the Somer

Fireside Breaks
Storm watching, star gazing, Dorset rocks and Devon stones in the South West this winter.

|
 | It’s just a quick flit from some of the country’s big cities, yet venture into the Somerset countryside and it feels as though you’ve completely dropped off the 21st Century map. The Quantock Hills, the Somerset Levels, Exmoor - these are places where the ‘real’ world of speeding traffic, stress overloads and continual rush has barely dented daily life, and you’ll find your shoulders dropping and your forehead uncreasing with each hour that passes here.
