Jelberts Ices
Jelberts has resisted the temptation to expand and remains a one-off, niche product - probably the nearest thing to homemade ice cream that you can buy in Cornwall. Based in Newlyn, it grew out of a dairy business run by Jim Glover's grandfather before the Second World War, which delivered local milk and other dairy products in and around the town. Relish Jelberts' ice cream while you can: Jim Glover may be the last generation to run this business. Open Easter - October. More »

Heal Farm Fine Food
Situated in the heart of the Devon countryside. The Heal Farm story started in the 1970s, when Anne Petch received a piglet for her 16th birthday. Now, more than 30 years on, Heal Farm is a thriving family business at the forefront of the movement to use traditional farming methods in the rearing of rare breeds. The farm's activities have now diversified to include rare breeds of lamb and beef as well as stocking non-meat products including locally reared smoked fish and wonderful traditional cheeses. More »

Riverford Organic Farm Shop
Bursting at the seams with real, organic, local food and drink. The ethos here is based on simplicity and quality; they pledge that you won't find anything over-packaged, over-processed or over-priced. On sunny days you can munch your purchases in the peaceful picnic area overlooking the rolling Devon fields. This was the first Riverford shop to open. Twenty-five years on, the formula has proved so popular that there are now outlets in Kitley and Totnes too. More »

St Kew Harvest Shop
All the food here is Cornish; organic Bodmin Moor mutton, Bude ewe's milk halloumi cheese, oak smoked paprika salami from Delabole. Drop in to the tea room for some home-baked treats. The coffee is heavenly too; they grind their own beans to make the perfect cup. If you're on the hop on holiday, or just want to cut loose from the kitchen, ask about their hampers: cream teas, picnics, breakfast, lunch or dinner - they'll even box up a traditional Sunday roast, all you have to do is put it in the oven! The River Cottage Store and Canteen
Local, ethical produce is the ethos at the River Cottage Local Produce Store. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, of Channel 4's River Cottage, and team, source the best local produce from South West producers for the store, where regular tasting evenings and events are held.
With a different menu every day, reflecting what's in season, The Canteen also showcases the best of the South West, with mouthwatering meals and a wicked selection of cakes and cream teas. Reservations recommended for evenings and Sunday lunch.

River Cottage HQ Cookery School
Nearby, on the Devon Dorset border is the famous River Cottage HQ where you can dig deeper into the River Cottage philosophy and learn how to recreate some of those fabulous dishes. Hugh and the team run a wide range of events and day courses including bread baking, chicken rearing and meat curing at Park Farm between Axminster and Lyme Regis. More »

Moby Nick's
We love the name and the fishmonger who The Classic Team found while scouting for ingredients to bake a Stargazey Pie (a traditional Cornish pie made with sardines or herrings poking their heads out of the pastry at the sky). There's a good selection of fish here, and if you fancy trying your hand at foraging while you're in the area, ask Nick behind the counter - he knows his do's from his deadly don'ts. More »
