Rick Stein has brought his successful formula to Falmouth. The menu is similar to Stein's Fish and Chips in Padstow with the restaurant and takeaway serving up traditional favourites such as fish 'n' chips in beef dripping, chip butties and mushy peas. Upstairs is an altogether more glamourous affair, with the Oyster Bar serving champagne and Cornish oysters.

A funky, independent cafe with excellent eco credentials and a delicious, wholesome menu. Miss Peapod's is situated right on the water at Penryn wharf. St Mawes Castle (2.2 miles)
This impressive castle is one of the best-preserved of Henry VII's coastal fortresses. Together with Pendennis Castle on the other side of the Fal Estaury, St Mawes stood guard against attacks from France and Spain during the 16th Century. Today, its superb location, with stunning views of the coastline, makes it a great spot to enjoy a picnic. Take the ferry from Falmouth for a day out without the car.

Lying on the shore of the River Fal, the village of Feock can be reached easily fom Falmouth or Truro by road or by the King Harry Ferry. Trelissick House and Garden are to the west. Tregew, a former farmhouse, dates back to 1315. From nearby Loe Beach 30 or more oyster boats can be seen working during the winter months.

Kennall Vale Gunpowder Works (4.1 miles)
Tucked away in a wooded valley near the village of Ponsanooth, the old Gunpowder Works were in operation from the 1800s until the early 20th Century, when they were forced to close due to the invention of dynamite. Today, the remains stand in a nature reserve maintained by The Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The old ruins, beech woods and Kendall river make for a pleasant walk. Park in the village of Ponsanooth, walk past the shop and up the steep hill. The reserve entrance is on your right.

Glendurgan Garden (4.6 miles)
A sheltered valley garden bordering the Helford River next door to Trebah. 'A little 'peace' of heaven on earth' is how the Fox family, who donated Glendurgan to the National Trust, described the garden. With fine trees, rare and exotic plants from all over the world, carpets of wild flowers, and stunning spring displays of camellias and magnolias, it is a little slice of peace served up on the banks of the Helford. The Maze and the 'Giant's Stride' rope swing are firm favourites with the kids; the impressive Laurel Maze will baffle and delight all ages.

Trebah Garden (4.9 miles)
There's subtropical lushness around every corner at these stunning gardens on the banks of the Helford River. The views from the 18th Century house across the gardens to the river are not to be missed. Wend your way through camellia groves and chusan palms, woodlands and bamboo; meander alongside pools and streams, giant-leafed gunnera and hydrangeas, to emerge onto Trebah's private beach. Perfect for a swim and a picnic in summer. Not picnic weather? Head to the Planters Cafe (winner of the 2008 Cornwall Tourism Award for Popular Restaurant/Cafe of the Year) or have a browse in the gallery and plant shops.
