This has to be one of the best parts of the south west for traffic-free cycling. South Devon has some fantastic trails that give you days of happy cycling without so much as a moped to disturb you. There are also any number of places to hire a bike, all conveniently located near the best cycling spots. A great family route is the Exeter Canal Trail. Flat, easy cycling and traffic-free, this route runs between Exeter down to the south coast at Dawlish Warren. Another waterside route is the Exe Estuary Trail, which follows the Exe River from Exeter south towards the sea, again, away from roads and traffic. If you’d prefer something with a bit more ‘wilderness’ involved, try Haldon Forest, just outside Exeter. There are three bike trails here; the first is suitable for families with small children, and has wide, flat trails. The second is slightly more challenging, with level single track, and the third is a mountain biking area, more suitable for seasoned off-road enthusiasts.
