By far the most popular traffic-free cycle route in north Devon is the Tarka Trail. The part of the route that is open to cyclists runs from Meeth, just north of Dartmoor, to Braunton on the coast, using old railway lines. You’ll be cycling past streams and rivers, timeless oak woodland, salt marshes and some of Devon’s most unspoilt countryside. Exmoor offers some more challenging riding along the many miles of bridleways that criss-cross the National Park. You probably won’t get away with using a road bike, so if you’re planning to head for the moor, hire a mountain bike.
