Towns and Villages in Devon - Dartmoor   Towns and Villages

Devon - Dartmoor >> Towns >> Towns and Villages

The villages scattered around the moor are brimming with history, much of it of a fairly mythical, even spooky nature. They are also full of gorgeous cottages and attractive inns.

Tavistock
Big by Dartmoor standards, Tavistock is a town that seems to have everything - fancy restaurants, a historic market, a cinema, lots of shops and some good attractions, too. Plenty to do here on a rainy day.

Bovey Tracey
A bustling hub of activity, this town has an artsy-craftsy feel. It has all you need in terms of food and basics, and it’s a good bet for treats and presents, too.

Buckfastleigh
Is a small, quiet town surrounded by hills and meadows. Best known for nearby Buckfast Abbey (now famous for its honey and wine) and the South Devon Railway that runs along the River Dart to the market town of Totnes seven miles away. There is a strange mausoleum in the town churchyard which local legend says has black dogs howling and breathing fire around it - this was apparently the inspiration for Conan Doyle’s ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

Chagford
There’s a distinctly ‘des res’ feel about Chagford - lots of pretty art galleries, upmarket cafes and chi-chi shops. A relaxing place for an amble.

Ivybridge
Perfectly poised between Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams, Ivybridge makes a fantastic base for an exploration of Devon. Excellent walking, cycling, horse riding and rock climbing is right on the doorstep, and if you jump in the car, the fabulous beaches of the south Devon coast are just a short drive away. For horticulture fans, Lukesland Gardens, with 24 acres of woodlands, shrubs and wild flowers set into a valley with a cascading brook running through it, is less than two miles from Ivybridge.

Lifton
Almost nudging the border of Cornwall, Lifton lies in the folds of the hilly Devon countryside. Despite the fact that Lifton is a small village, it has two major attractions to boast. The first, The Fairground Heritage Centre, is a magical exploration of the history of fairground rides and includes some mesmerizing examples of steam-driven carousels. Holding an entirely different appeal is the nearby Roadford Lake; 730 acres of water draws anglers, watersports enthusiasts, ramblers and cyclists throughout the year.

One of the great gateways to Dartmoor and a pretty market town, Moretonhampstead is surrounded by jaw-droppingly lovely countryside. Once you’ve exhausted yourself hiking, biking, riding or climbing around the wilds of Dartmoor, you’ll find Moretonhampstead the perfect place to rejuvenate with great pub and café food. North Bovey
With the heather-clad hills and valleys of Dartmoor dominating the skyline, North Bovey is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The word picturesque barely does North Bovey justice; the village green, with its traditional pump and stone cross, is surrounded by 18th century thatched cottages. The 13th century pub, the Ring of Bells, is the ideal opportunity to linger over a drink and soak up the surroundings.
