On Dartmoor, it makes a lot of sense to leave the roads behind and take to the bridleways. If you don’t have a mountain bike, it’s worth hiring one while you’re here - a road bike will make heavy weather of the tracks. Please note that riding over open moorland is a big no-no - stick to the clearly marked paths. Two of the most popular routes for cycling on Dartmoor are the Granite Way, an 11 mile journey across the northern edge of the National Park, using an old railway line, and the Dartmoor Way, an epic 90 mile trail (you don’t have to do it all) that covers the whole of Dartmoor. There is also a free bus service specifically for cyclists called the Dartmoor Freewheeler; chuck your bike in the trailer, climb on board and get driven to the top of Dartmoor - then it’s downhill all the way home.
