Luxulyan Valley World Heritage Site
Situated in south east Cornwall with miles of walks through the hidden steep-sided thickly-wooded River Par valley, the Luxulyan Valley was designated a World Heritage Site in 2006 due to its major concentration of industrial remains, the majority of which are as a result of the work of Joseph Treffry (1782 -1850). Treffry owned one of the largest copper mines which at its peak was worked by 17 water wheels and six steam engines. Treffry’s viaduct, the abundant industrial remains and the breathtaking natural beauty of this area make it a truly unique site in the South West. More »

John Betjeman Summer Readings
Many a village has a reading room, but here, words attain greatness. Flop out on the dunes at St Enodoc church where the Poet Laureate rests in peace and listen to his poetry read out loud. The pop of a cork beats the crack of a beer can, so best take wine.

Kennall Vale Gunpowder Works
Tucked away in a wooded valley near the village of Ponsanooth, the old Gunpowder Works were in operation from the 1800s until the early 20th Century, when they were forced to close due to the invention of dynamite. Today, the remains stand in a nature reserve maintained by The Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The old ruins, beech woods and Kennall river make for a pleasant walk. Park in the village of Ponsanooth, walk past the shop and up the steep hill. The reserve entrance is on your right. More »
