Berry Pomeroy Castle
(4.6 miles)
15th century Berry Pomeroy Castle is secreted away in a steep wooded valley. The ruin still displays a wall painting of the Three Kings in its gatehouse chamber. The great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon, a match for Longleat and Audley End however it was abandoned by 1700 and subsequently became the subject of many a chilling ghost story, some of which can be heard in the audio tour. To get a good view of the ruin from below, take the woodland, although this can be steep in parts.

Newton Abbot
(2.1 miles)
Newton Abbot has a long, rich history in many different trades, from wool and leather in medieval times to the locomotive industry in the Victorian era. All have left their mark on the town, which has an interesting architectural legacy, including plenty of well-preserved, imposing Victorian buildings. Now, Newton Abbot is more geared towards leisure; a much-loved race course, no less than three public parks and England’s only traditional malthouse that is open to the public – and yes, you can sample the ales!
