Exmoor National Park
(4.6 miles)
This route is along the highest of the sea cliffs in the Exmoor National Park. Starting at Combe Martin take the coast path around Wild Pear Beach, then a stiff climb to Little Hangman (715 feet high). Climb on - more gradual this time - up to 1046 feet and the summit of Great Hangman to get the best of the panorama across Combe Martin Bay.

Woolacombe Sand
(4.2 miles)
At first glance, Woolacombe appears to have been somewhat swamped by modern holiday facilities, with rows of hotels, shops and cafes. Once on the beach, however, it’s easy to ignore the tussle of commerce going on in the town - extensive dunes shield the development and leave you to enjoy three miles of flat, wide sand. Even on the busiest summer day, if you’re happy to take a stroll along the beach, you’ll find a quiet spot to lay your towel.

Ilfracombe
(1.6 miles)
One of the most popular seaside resorts in Victorian times, Ilfracombe has recently undergone something of a renaissance, with some of the most elegant Victorian architecture having been restored. Damien Hirst’s new restaurant here has put the spotlight on the town and drawn food lovers from afar.

Combe Martin
(4.6 miles)
Combe Martin is on the edge of Exmoor and claims to have the longest village street in England. Visit the Pack of Cards Inn, built to celebrate a large win at cards by George Lay in 1626; it has 52 windows, one for each card in the pack, and four floors, each with 13 doors. The beach is perfect for the whole family with rock pools, cliffs, caves and pebbles plus lots of soft sand when the tide is out.

Rockham Bay
(3.5 miles)
One of the few hidden little coves on this stretch of coastline, Rockham is also not the easiest beach to get to. A bit of a walk plus three flights of steps are off-putting for many, so if you’re after a bit of peace and don’t mind making the effort, this is a great choice.

Lee to Bull Point
(2.0 miles)
There are lovely sea and valley views along a walk from the small coastal village of Lee, west of Ilfracombe to Bull Point. Take a route through Borough Valley and Damage to the Point, returning along the coast by the lighthouse. The Brumpus Inn at Lee is good for lunch.

Woolacombe
(3.5 miles)
Beaches don’t come any bigger than this – Woolacombe’s sands stretch beyond the horizon in a perfect yellow arc. Surfing is the main activity here and this bay is a great place to learn, with consistent swell and a gently shelving beach. The town has a classic seaside feel, with ice cream parlours, surf shops and cafes serving fresh local seafood. There’s an unhurried pace of life here that just begs you to unwind.
